”a meeting between Chinese law enforcement and the UK’s National Crime Agency”?
We have previously written extensively about INTERPOL’s developments and initiatives aimed at enhancing its capabilities in fighting transnational financial crime, both at domestic and international levels. This includes a recent overview of INTERPOL’s activities across China and Africa.
In our most recent articles, we summarised developments arising from the latest meeting in Singapore and took another look at the INTERPOL Silver Notice. Looking ahead, we noted how INTERPOL is expanding its presence in Singapore to address a surge in cybercrime across the region.
In the context of INTERPOL’s global cooperation efforts, we now turn our focus closer to home and examine a recent meeting between senior Chinese and UK law enforcement officials, during which a renewed commitment to INTERPOL coordination was discussed.
The meeting demonstrated a deepening practical cooperation between the two countries in the fight against economic crime, including their attempts to combat fraud.
Specifically, Chinese and UK law enforcement officials emphasised the importance of increasing coordinated action through frameworks such as INTERPOL, strengthening cooperation in law enforcement capacity-building and advancing bilateral enforcement cooperation.
The UK also expressed its willingness to maintain close communication with China to further enhance bilateral law enforcement efforts.
This development serves as another significant warning to individuals and corporations with outstanding legal issues China or the UK.
Accordingly, both individuals and businesses that have conducted activities in China and the UK and are concerned about potential liability – perhaps even due to an outstanding civil dispute – would do well to remain vigilant. Any financial dealings are now likely to come under much greater scrutiny than previously anticipated.
It has recently been reported that following the publication by INTERPOL of a Red Notice requested by China, a “Chinese fraud fugitive” was arrested in South Africa. The individual subsequently appeared in court and was then returned from South Africa to China.
