In an intriguing coincidence, the past week saw Glasgow host both the renowned New York band Interpol and the international criminal police organisation INTERPOL. While music enthusiasts enjoyed live performances from the band, global law enforcement leaders gathered for the 92nd session of the INTERPOL General Assembly, held from 4–7 November.
Prime Minister Addresses INTERPOL General Assembly
The British Prime Minister opened this year’s INTERPOL General Assembly, emphasising the critical need for continuous international police cooperation to combat global crime. The Prime Minister highlighted successful collaborations, such as a joint operation involving 60 countries that tackled online scams—resulting in 4,000 arrests and the seizure of over $250 million in assets. Efforts to infiltrate and dismantle platforms used by cybercrime groups such as LockBit were also discussed.
Implications for Future International Cooperation
An announcement was made regarding increased investment in INTERPOL projects, with the UK allocating £6 million this financial year. This funding aims to enhance data sharing and communication capabilities, sending a clear message to criminals that there are no safe havens.
Domestically, the Prime Minister visited the National Crime Agency (NCA) headquarters, revealing a further £58 million investment to strengthen data analysis and intelligence operations. These initiatives underscore the UK’s commitment to leading the fight against serious organised crime.
Post-Brexit Intelligence Sharing with the EU
Acknowledging the challenges posed by Brexit, the Prime Minister discussed efforts to restore and enhance intelligence-sharing with European partners. Intentions were expressed to establish a new security pact with the EU, aiming to regain access to real-time intelligence networks. This topic is set to be a focal point at the upcoming European Political Community meeting in Hungary.
A Call for International Cooperation
A plea was made for increased collaboration across borders to save lives and time. Emphasising that criminals do not respect borders, the Prime Minister underscored the necessity of international cooperation in combating serious organised crime.
