INTERPOL UPDATE: Success of INTERPOL’s Silver Notice

Jul 04 2025

International Protection

We have been closely tracking the increased use of the INTERPOL Silver Notice.

This includes INTERPOL’s collaboration with Indian enforcement to enhance international cooperation, with African law enforcement to disrupt criminal activity by way of the INTERPOL Silver Notice, as well as the INTERPOL Silver Notice featuring on the agenda at the latest European Regional Conference.

Indeed, since the inception of the Silver Notice in January 2025, its use has grown exponentially.

By the end of June 2025, INTERPOL reported over 50 published Silver Notices worldwide.

Has the INTERPOL Silver Notice been successful thus far?

In a word, yes!

The first Silver Notice requested by Italy in January 2025 resulted in over USD 1.7 million in illegal assets being identified and located in Brazil. Following initial contact between the Italian and Brazilian judicial bodies, the publication of the Silver Notice by INTERPOL’s specialist financial crime unit enabled direct bilateral police coordination. The Silver Notice allowed the Brazilian authorities to identify the illegal assets.

Since inception, the data from the Silver Notice and Diffusions has led to hundreds of targets and new leads being identified for investigations, confirmed Claudio Marinelli, Operational Coordinator of INTERPOL’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre.

Additionally, to further its potential, INTERPOL organised workshops to provide the authorities of its member countries with a better understanding of how to make use of it.

What is a Silver Notice used for?

A Silver Notice is used as a means to “track the offenders, terrorist financers and others who are using virtual currencies like bitcoin to move and store illicit funds, out of the reach of law enforcement and other authorities”:

What is INTERPOL’s Silver Notice?

In January 2025, we wrote an article explaining how INTERPOL had published its first-ever Silver Notice:

INTERPOL publishes its first-ever Silver Notice to trace criminal assets

What assets does the Silver Notice target?

The Silver Notice targets assets that constitute illegal proceeds of criminal activities, such as fraud, corruption, drugs, arms and human trafficking and environmental crime. These assets may range from cryptocurrency or cash to real estate and luxury items (such as yachts or cars).

What is the purpose of a Silver Notice?

The purpose of the Silver Notice is to target the financial gains of criminals, and by doing so, “to disrupt criminal networks and reduce their harmful impact on communities worldwide.”
