Alanna Choong

Alanna joined Gherson in 2023. Her practice focuses on international protection, human rights and appeals, with particular emphasis on politically motivated claims. She was promoted to Trainee Solicitor in December 2024.

Alanna has been praised by senior King’s Counsel for her ability to deal with complex legal issues and to provide highly determinative research and input on difficult and challenging legal cases. Alanna works under the direct supervision of Partner Charles Burnett on a range of claims and appeals, which is a testament to the quality of her contribution.

Notable Experience
  • Conducting research which was adopted and deployed by leading Counsel in a novel tribunal hearing concerning the lawfulness of the withdrawal of a Home Office refusal, which served to preserve the client’s right of appeal and allowed it to proceed.
  • Assisting in the preparation of evidence for a novel international protection claim, despite pre-existing country guidance decisions that contradicted the client’s claim.
  • Assisting in a complex 15-day international protection appeal hearing before the First-tier Tribunal.
  • Contributing to the organisation and preparation of a seven-day Article 8 ECHR human rights appeal hearing before the First-tier Tribunal.
  • Leading an appeal against a refusal of an EUSS application before the First-tier Tribunal.
  • Assisting in the preparation of further evidence submissions for an international protection claim based on Article 3 ECHR.
  • Successfully assisting clients in obtaining refugee status at first instance on the basis of their sexual orientation.
  • Successfully securing adult dependent relative status for a client based on their dependency on a sibling, overcoming complex factual circumstances.
