Will I need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK?

Dec 13 2024

UK Immigration

The UK is taking significant steps to modernise its immigration system by introducing Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs). The ETA scheme is a new immigration measure announced in March 2023. This digital transformation will streamline processes, enhance security and ensure quicker journeys for millions of visitors who pass through the UK border each year. This article breaks down what the ETA scheme is, who needs it, how to apply and why it has been introduced.

What are ETAs?

An ETA is a digital travel permission for individuals who:

  • Do not currently require a visa for short stays in the UK.
  • Do not already hold a UK immigration status.

It is essential to note that an ETA is not a visa and does not grant permission to enter the UK. Instead, it authorises travel to the UK, with entry determined at the border.

Who needs an ETA and when?

  • Eligible non-Europeans can apply now and will need an ETA to travel from 8 January 2025.
  • Eligible Europeans can apply from 5 March 2025 and will require an ETA to travel from 2 April 2025.
  • Visitors from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations already require an ETA to travel to the UK.

Who is exempt from an ETA?

An ETA is not required for:

  • British and Irish citizens.
  • British Overseas Territory Citizens using relevant passports.
  • Residents with valid UK visas, immigration permissions or exemptions.
  • Individuals legally resident in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man.

Importantly, non-visa nationals living in Ireland do not need an ETA when travelling to the UK, preserving the Common Travel Area agreements.

Key features of an ETA

  • Costs £10.
  • Permits multiple journeys to the UK over a two-year period or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Allows stays of up to six months at a time.
  • Follows the example of other countries like the US and Australia, enhancing border security while preventing the entry of individuals who pose a threat.

How to apply for an ETA

Applications can be made online or via the UK ETA app for a £10 fee per person. The process involves linking the ETA to a passport, which must be used for travel.
Decisions are typically issued within three working days and confirmed via email.

What if an ETA application is rejected?

If an application is rejected:

  • The applicant will be informed of the reason.
  • Reapplying is possible, but if refused, the individual will need to apply for a visa to seek permission to travel to the UK.

ETAs for transit passengers

Transit passengers through UK airports will also need an ETA. This measure enhances security by preventing individuals from using connecting flights to bypass travel authorisation rules.

Conclusion

The introduction of ETAs reflects the UK’s commitment to a secure and efficient border system. By adopting cutting-edge technology, the UK aligns with global standards and ensures the safety of its citizens while facilitating smoother travel for visitors.
