South Korea’s impressive archery medal haul at the recently concluded Paris Olympics has highlighted their expertise in the sport. If they were to offer coaching services to British athletes, South Korean archery Olympians would initially need to apply for an International Sportsperson visa to secure the right to work in the UK.
South Korea’s impressive Olympic performance in Paris, with 13 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze medals has solidified the nation’s reputation as a global sporting powerhouse. Their exceptional success has created high demand for Korean coaches in various sports, including archery, shooting and fencing. The UK could significantly benefit from their expertise by offering them opportunities to train and work here.
The International Sportsperson visa is the most suitable immigration option for South Korean sports coaches and athletes. The visa is designed for top-level athletes and coaches to allow them to live and work in the UK whilst advancing their careers in their respective sports fields. This visa allows them to stay in the UK for up to three years initially, and leads to settlement after five years. Applicants can also bring their dependants.
To qualify for this visa, an individual must be an elite athlete or coach, sponsored by a UK sports governing body or a professional sports club. The applicant will also need a job offer in an eligible role from an approved UK sponsor holding an International Sportsperson Sponsor Licence, and have been endorsed by a Home Office approved UK Sports Governing Body. For archery, the governing body is Archery GB, whilst it is British Shooting that can endorse shooting athletes and coaches for their expertise.
The International Sportsperson visa offers a viable pathway for South Korean coaches and athletes to work and live in the UK, potentially leading to long-term settlement. However, meeting the strict requirements, including sponsorship, endorsement and financial sufficiency, can be challenging. It is therefore essential to get legal advice before initiating the process. By strategically attracting and retaining top-tier South Korean sports professionals, the UK can elevate its sporting standards, foster cultural exchange and strengthen its international reputation.
