What is the Life in the UK Test for British citizenship?

The Life in the UK test is a multiple-choice exam consisting of 24 questions about British traditions and customs, which you need to complete in 45 minutes. You may need to take this test, if you are applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK or British citizenship, and you are between the ages of 18-64.

The Life in the UK test is not an academic examination. However, it is a test which most people will need to study for.

To pass the test, you need to score 75% or more on your multiple-choice questions. If you are successful in passing the test, you will receive a unique reference number that you will then need to input into your online ILR or naturalisation application form.

If you do not pass the test the first time round, rest assured that you can re-attempt it as many times as you require. There is also no expiry date on the test, which means that if you have already taken the test for ILR, you can rely on it again for your naturalisation application.

Not everyone needs to take the Life in the UK test, for example, those who are under the age of 18 or over 65 will be automatically exempt. You can also apply for an exemption if you are aged 18-64 but have a mental or physical disability which prevents you from sitting the test. Furthermore, it is worth noting that if you are applying for ILR by way of Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you are not required to pass the Life in the UK test for such an application.
