What is a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)?

If you are an international student looking to study in the UK, you have likely encountered the term “Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)”. This document is a critical component of your student visa application, issued by your chosen educational institution.

What is a CAS?

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique electronic reference number issued by UK institutions that are approved to sponsor international students under the student visa route. It’s more than just a reference number, however. The CAS also includes detailed information about your course, your institution and your qualifications. It demonstrates that you have been offered an unconditional place to study and that your institution believes you meet the requirements for a student visa.

Who issues the CAS?

The CAS is issued by your educational institution, provided it is licensed by the UK Home Office as a student visa sponsor. Examples include universities, colleges and other recognised educational organisations in the UK.

Once you have accepted an unconditional offer of admission and met any other prerequisites your institution may require (i.e. deposit payment), they will generate the CAS and share it with you.

What information does the CAS contain?

Your CAS will contain important information, such as:

  • Your personal details
  • Details of your course
  • Sponsor information
  • Financial information
  • Qualification evidence

Why is the CAS important for your student visa?

The CAS is a mandatory document for your student visa application. Without it, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) will not process your student visa application. The CAS confirms that you have been accepted to study at a legitimate UK educational institution. It ensures that you and your institution comply with UK Immigration laws.

How do you use the CAS?

When applying for your student visa, you will need to provide your CAS number on the visa application form. This number links directly to the UKVI system, where they can verify your information.

It is important to note that the CAS number itself isn’t enough to obtain a successful student visa – you will also need to meet all other visa requirements, such as access to sufficient funds,  evidence of English language proficiency, a tuberculosis test certificate if applicable, etc.

How long is the CAS valid for?

A CAS is valid for six months from the date it is issued. However, you can only use it to apply for a student visa within six months before your course starts if you are applying from outside the UK. Timing is critical in such visa applications and therefore you should ensure to plan accordingly.
