On 24 July 2023, the Home Office released updated policy guidance to clarify the eligibility requirements of the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS).
Following new updates to the guidance, there are now three ‘pathways’ through which someone can be referred to the ACRS. It is important to note that direct applications to the ACRS cannot be made.
Under pathway 1, individuals can be referred to the ACRS if they have been deemed vulnerable and at-risk, and if they have been provided with an assurance of evacuation by the UK government.
Under pathway 2, individuals can be referred to the ACRS by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Under pathway 3, individuals can be referred to the ACRS by the British Council, GardaWorld or Chevening Alumni on the basis of having supported the UK and intentional community effort in Afghanistan prior to the Taliban takeover.
It is anticipated that up to 20,000 further Afghan citizens and their eligible family members will be resettled under the ACRS over the coming years via these three pathways.
