UK Immigration

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa is an excellent opportunity for young individuals to experience life in the UK while gaining professional or personal development.

This visa allows eligible candidates to live, work and explore the United Kingdom for up to two years or three years, depending on the applicant’s nationality. Whether you want to enhance your career, broaden your horizons or simply experience a new culture, this visa can provide the perfect platform.

Who can apply?

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa is specifically designed for young people aged 18 to 30, or aged 18 to 35, from participating countries and territories. As of the latest updates, eligible countries include:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Andorra
  • Iceland
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • San Marino
  • Uruguay
  • Hong Kong (if you have a Special Administrative Region “SAR” passport) – through a ballot system
  • Taiwan – through a ballot system
  • British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens, and British Nationals (Overseas)

Indian nationals can apply for a similar visa under the India Young Professionals Scheme, which allows citizens aged 18 to 30 to live and work in the UK for up to two years. Similarly to the schemes available to Taiwan and Hong Kong (holding SAR passports) nationals this programme operates through a ballot system.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the Youth Mobility Scheme visa, applicants must:

  1. Meet the age requirement: Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30 years old—or 18 and 35 years old, for applicants from certain countries—at the time of application.
  2. Have sufficient savings: Demonstrate at least £2,530 in personal savings to prove they can support themselves in the UK for the initial period.
  3. Not have dependants: This visa is not suitable for applicants who wish to bring children or partners as dependants.
  4. Have a valid passport: Applicants need a passport from one of the eligible countries or territories.

Meet specific country requirements: For example, Indian nationals must apply through a ballot system and receive an invitation to apply before proceeding with their application.

Application process

The application process for the Youth Mobility Scheme visa is straightforward but requires careful attention to detail:

  1. Complete the online application: Start by filling out the correct visa application form on the UK Government’s official website.
  2. Pay the application fee: The current fee is £298. In addition, applicants need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which provides access to the National Health Service (NHS) during their stay.
  3. Submit biometric information: Visit a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph or use the ID Check app, depending on your location.
  4. Provide supporting documents: These include proof of savings, a valid passport and any country-specific requirements.
  5. Wait for a decision: Visa processing for applications made outside the UK typically takes around three weeks and eight weeks for extension applications within the UK. A priority service may be available to expedite the decision, with processing times of either 1 working day or 5 working days.

Benefits of the Youth Mobility Scheme visa

This visa provides a host of benefits, including:

  • Work opportunities: Visa holders can work for most employers in the UK, excluding certain roles like professional sportspersons.
  • Study options: Visa holders have the option to study in the UK.
  • Flexibility: Visa holders are free to travel in and out of the UK as often as they wish during their stay.
  • Cultural exchange: The scheme fosters cultural understanding and international connections.

Things to keep in mind

  • Visa extension: You may only apply to extend your visa if you are a national of Australia, Canada or New Zealand. To be eligible, you must be residing in the UK and have a valid leave remaining on your current visa.
  • Future applications: Participants can only benefit from this visa once, so careful planning is essential.

Conclusion

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa is a fantastic way to experience life in the UK for young individuals eager to expand their horizons. By understanding the eligibility criteria and application process, prospective applicants can make the most of this unique opportunity. If you are ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, consider applying for the Youth Mobility Scheme visa and discover what the UK has to offer.
