Steps to take if your UK visa has expired

Mar 31 2025

UK Immigration

The Home Office will not remind you that your visa is expiring, however, you can usually check your immigration status online through your e-visa account. If your visa expires while you are still in the UK, and you have not made a new application beforehand, you will immediately become an overstayer and will be in breach of the immigration rules.

Overstaying your visa

Becoming an overstayer can create substantial issues. For instance:

  • You cannot work or rent a property in the UK.
  • You can be detained and removed from the country.
  • It can impact your future visa applications.

Do not panic – here is what you can do

It is crucial to act quickly and check how long ago your visa expired – you need to have a clear understanding of your timeline.

The 14-day exemption

If it has been less than 14 days since your visa expired, you may be able to make a valid visa application from within the UK. However, you must have a good reason for the delay, such as a medical emergency. Please keep in mind that you will need to provide evidence of this.

If it has been more than 14 days since your visa expired, your options are limited and complicated.  You may be required to make an application outside of the immigration rules based on compassionate rounds. You may, however, need to leave the UK and apply to re-enter.

If you are unclear about the options, we would be happy to assist you.

Contact an immigration specialist

It is a good idea to get in touch with an immigration specialist for assistance with:

  • understanding whether you can apply late.
  • gathering evidence and preparing a strong explanation for the delayed application.
  • exploring claims based on your private life.
  • planning for future applications, if this is applicable.

Get in touch with our team and we can help you evaluate your situation and assist with the process!
