Lisa Uttley comments in People Management on new protections for modern slavery victims
Lisa Uttley, Partner at Gherson Solicitors LLP, has commented in People Management on new Home Office reforms allowing eligible Skilled Worker visa holders who have been recognised as victims of modern slavery to work in any occupation for the remainder of their visa. The changes, which take effect on 8 October 2026, are intended to enable victims to leave exploitative employers without losing their immigration status. Lisa highlighted that the new provisions apply only to workers who have been formally identified as victims, rather than on the basis of self-declaration. Commenting on the practical implications for employers, Lisa said: “Practically, employers should be reviewing their modern slavery and safeguarding policies now, ensuring HR teams know how to recognise the signs of exploitation and how to make referrals into the NRM”.
