A new appendix, Appendix Children, has been introduced to provide a comprehensive framework for considering the rights and best interests of children in UK immigration matters. It includes common requirements for children applying as dependants of a lead applicant, as well as children applying in their own right.
Appendix Children is one of many appendices to the UK Immigration Rules. It is designed to unify the requirements for children applying as dependants of a main applicant, as well as children applying in their own right.
Common requirements for dependent children relate to their age, whether they conduct an independent life, their care, and the relationship with their parent or guardian. No policy changes have been made to these requirements, but this new appendix provides more clarity and consistency.
Standard parental consent is required where a child is applying for entry clearance or permission to stay in the UK in their own right.
This Appendix took effect on 5 October 2023. It has already been applied to certain routes and will be extended further in the future.
