I want to apply for British citizenship, what do I need to be aware of?

UK Immigration

When making an application for British citizenship, it is important for the applicant to consider how they will meet the Home Office requirements and whether they have the necessary evidence to support the application. Below we briefly highlight some of the important requirements to be aware of prior to making the application.

Absences from the UK during your qualifying period will be one of the key things to think about when making this application. This period will be 3 years if you are married to a British national at the time, or 5 years in all other instances. It is important to maintain a running record of the time spent outside the UK, as you will need to show that you did not spend more than the permitted number of days out of the country during the 3 or 5 years you are relying on.

The good character requirement is another important condition, which needs to be met when making an application for British citizenship. The Home Office will ask whether the applicant has any civil or criminal penalties (amongst other things) to their name. This is one of the key elements the Home Office will look at to determine whether the applicant should be granted British citizenship.

You will also need show that you have sufficient knowledge of life in the UK and the English language. In order to meet the first requirement, you will need to take and pass the Life in the UK test. You may have done so already for a previous indefinite leave to remain application, in which case you do not need to sit the test again. In order to meet the second requirement, you will need to show that you are either a national of a majority-English speaking country, that you have a university degree from a UK university, or that you have passed a Home Office approved English language test.
