How to apply for a UK visa to study an English language course

02 May 2025, 05 mins ago

If you are considering coming to the UK to study English, you are not alone. Every year, thousands of international students travel to the UK to immerse themselves in English language and British culture. Whether your goal is academic advancement, career development or simply improving your communication skills, studying English in the UK can be a transformative experience.

At Gherson, we regularly assist individuals who wish to apply for visas to study English in the UK. This article outlines the available visa options, what they allow and which one might be right for your circumstances.

What is an English language course?

An English language course is a full-time educational programme designed to enhance your general English abilities. These courses typically focus on key areas such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

They are often taken by international students as a stepping stone to further education, such as vocational courses, foundation programmes or undergraduate degrees. Depending on your goals and availability, courses typically last from one week to up to a year.

Can I study English in the UK on a Visitor visa?

Yes – but only under specific circumstances.

Under the “Visit to Study” route, a Standard Visitor visa allows you to study in the UK for up to 6 months. This includes English language courses at accredited institutions. However, your course must not exceed six months in duration.

It is crucial to note that your chosen course must be at an accredited institution. Moreover, the institution must not be a state-funded school or academy.

What if my course is longer than 6 months?

If your English language course lasts longer than six months but does not exceed eleven months, you’ll need to apply for a Short-term study visa.

This visa is specifically designed for those taking English language courses lasting between six and eleven months. It allows you to stay in the UK for the length of your course, plus an additional 30 days, provided the total stay does not exceed 11 months.

The main features of the Short-term study visa include:

  • Home Office application fee: £214
  • Cannot be extended beyond 11 months
  • Switching courses is not allowed – you must study only the course you applied for
  • You are not permitted to work, undertake business or participate in any work placements (paid or unpaid)
  • Studying at a state-funded school is not allowed
  • You cannot bring dependants with you
  • You are not eligible for public funds or state benefits

This route is ideal for individuals who are solely coming to the UK to improve their English and do not need the flexibility to work or change courses.

What if my course is longer than 11 months?

For English language studies that extend beyond 11 months, or if you plan to pursue a longer academic programme, the Student visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 visa) is required.

To apply for a Student visa, you must:

  • Be aged 16 or over;
  • Have an offer from a licensed student sponsor in the UK;
  • Demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself and pay for the course;
  • Prove your English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking and listening); and
  • If you’re 16 or 17, provide written parental consent and evidence

Visa application fees:

  • £524 if applying from outside the UK
  • £524 if switching to a Student visa from within the UK

Note that each person applying must pay the visa fee individually if you are bringing dependants– including any family members joining you (permitted for some Student visa holders).

The Student visa is the most comprehensive option and is suitable for those pursuing long-term academic goals in the UK.

Choosing the right visa: things to consider

When deciding which visa to apply for, it is essential to consider the length of your course, your future plans in the UK, and whether you intend to work or bring dependants.

If you are unsure which option best suits your needs, seeking legal advice can help you avoid mistakes and ensure your application meets all of the Home Office requirements.
