An English language course is a full-time educational programme designed to enhance your general English abilities. These courses typically focus on key areas such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
They are often taken by international students as a stepping stone to further education, such as vocational courses, foundation programmes or undergraduate degrees. Depending on your goals and availability, courses typically last from one week to up to a year.
Yes – but only under specific circumstances.
Under the “Visit to Study” route, a Standard Visitor visa allows you to study in the UK for up to 6 months. This includes English language courses at accredited institutions. However, your course must not exceed six months in duration.
It is crucial to note that your chosen course must be at an accredited institution. Moreover, the institution must not be a state-funded school or academy.
If your English language course lasts longer than six months but does not exceed eleven months, you’ll need to apply for a Short-term study visa.
This visa is specifically designed for those taking English language courses lasting between six and eleven months. It allows you to stay in the UK for the length of your course, plus an additional 30 days, provided the total stay does not exceed 11 months.
The main features of the Short-term study visa include:
This route is ideal for individuals who are solely coming to the UK to improve their English and do not need the flexibility to work or change courses.
For English language studies that extend beyond 11 months, or if you plan to pursue a longer academic programme, the Student visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 visa) is required.
To apply for a Student visa, you must:
Visa application fees:
Note that each person applying must pay the visa fee individually if you are bringing dependants– including any family members joining you (permitted for some Student visa holders).
The Student visa is the most comprehensive option and is suitable for those pursuing long-term academic goals in the UK.
When deciding which visa to apply for, it is essential to consider the length of your course, your future plans in the UK, and whether you intend to work or bring dependants.
If you are unsure which option best suits your needs, seeking legal advice can help you avoid mistakes and ensure your application meets all of the Home Office requirements.
