Global Talent visa for founders: can you qualify without investment?

UK Immigration

Many founders ask whether investment is required for the Global Talent visa. This blog explains when founders can qualify without funding, what evidence can substitute for investment and how endorsers assess entrepreneurial impact.

The Global Talent visa is a route that allows individuals to work in the UK as an employee, a self-employed person or a company director without requiring sponsorship. This means that their permission to stay in the UK is not dependent on their job or business.

This makes it an attractive alternative to the Innovator Founder visa, where endorsement can be withdrawn – and the visa curtailed – if an endorsing body deems that insufficient progress has been made at the 12- and 24-month reviews.

Applying for Global Talent as a founder

The Global Talent visa is available to recognised or potential leaders in the fields of:

  • Academia or research;
  • Arts and culture; and
  • Digital Technology.

Most applicants must be endorsed by an approved endorsing body before applying for the visa, unless the applicant has won an eligible prestigious prize, in which case they may apply for the visa directly.

Founders and entrepreneurs in the field of digital technology may wish to apply for endorsement to Tech Nation, as this route is open not just to those with a technical background, but also to recognised or potential leaders with experience in running companies in the tech sector.

To be endorsed as a leader by Tech Nation, applicants must show that they have been recognised as a leading talent in the digital technology sector in the last five years, and provide at least two pieces of evidence for two of the following:

  • A proven track record for innovation as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company, or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept;
  • Recognition for work beyond the applicant’s occupation that contributes to the advancement of the field;
  • Significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the field as a founder, senior executive, board member or employee of a product-led digital technology company;
  • Exceptional ability demonstrated through academic contributions, such as published research or endorsement by an expert.

To be endorsed as a potential leader, applicants must show that they have been recognised as having the potential to become a leading talent in the digital technology field in the last five years, be at an early stage in their career and provide at least two pieces of evidence for two of the following:

  • A proven track record of innovation as a founder of a product-led digital technology company or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept;
  • Recognition for work beyond the applicant’s occupation that contributes to the advancement of the field;
  • Significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the field as a founder or employee of a product-led digital technology company;
  • Exceptional ability in the field demonstrated through academic contributions, such as research endorsed by an expert.

How do endorsers assess entrepreneurial impact?

In addition to the above eligibility criteria, Tech Nation considers the following factors when assessing applications:

  • Career history, such as the international reputation and impact of the applicant’s work;
  • Strength of recommendation letters and supporting evidence;
  • Contribution to the UK digital technology sector and future impact if based in the UK;
  • Personal factors, such as academic track record, salary level and the hiring company, or – for entrepreneurs – the amount of money raised;
  • Commercial impact of past work, achievements and experiences.

Applicants may use letters of recommendation from senior executives, industry experts and company customers, extracts from newspapers and other media, as well as their own publications to demonstrate expertise in their field. Tech Nation also accepts internationally awarded prizes, high salaries and renumeration packages, as well as participation in high-profile events as evidence of recognised or potential leadership.

Entrepreneurs can demonstrate impact in several ways, including:

  • Leading marketing or business development at a product-led digital technology company, demonstrably enabling substantial revenue and/or customer growth or major commercial success;
  • Playing a key role in the growth of a product-led digital technology company, such as influencing investment and strategy or delivering major products or releases;
  • Founding a successful product-led digital technology company or other organisation and leading it;
  • Starting or contributing to open-source projects acknowledged by industry peers;
  • Working as a key engineer on a start-up’s core product and evidencing their contribution to its success;
  • Leading the development of high-impact digital products or services.

The Global Talent visa route is based on the applicant’s professional background and experience; therefore, founders do not require funding for their start-ups to apply for endorsement.

Applicants seeking endorsement through Tech Nation should be aware that the threshold is high. Business applicants must demonstrate that they are proven or emerging leaders in the development of digital products or in leading investments in significant digital product businesses, rather than simply founders of finance-sector or other non-technical companies.
