The UK has emerged as a sought-after destination for US citizens looking to relocate. This blog explores the most common immigration routes for this purpose.
With the recent election sparking among US nationals a keen interest in relocating abroad, the UK has emerged as a favoured destination. Below, we outline some key immigration routes that Americans may consider when planning their move to the UK.
Skilled Worker visa
The Skilled Worker visa is ideal for those US nationals who have a job offer from a UK-based employer. The role must meet specific skill and salary thresholds, and the employer must be a licensed immigration sponsor. This route is particularly appealing for, among others, healthcare, engineering and IT professionals.
Global Talent visa
For highly skilled individuals who specialise in science, humanities, engineering, the arts and digital technology, the Global Talent visa offers a pathway to the UK. Applicants must be endorsed as leaders or potential leaders in their field. This visa provides flexibility and allows individuals to be self-employed or hold multiple job roles.
Student visa
Many US nationals wish to pursue educational opportunities in the UK, and the Student visa supports their ambitions. To qualify, applicants must have an offer from a UK educational institution, prove their financial means to support themselves and demonstrate English language proficiency.
Family visa
Americans with family ties in the UK, such as a British spouse or partner, can apply for a Family visa. This route requires demonstrating a genuine relationship and meeting financial and accommodation requirements.
Ancestry visa
US citizens with dual nationality in the Commonwealth, British Overseas, British Overseas Territories, British National (Overseas) or Zimbabwe may have a claim to an Ancestry visa. You must prove that one of your grandparents was born in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man to be eligible, as well as fulfil other requirements. This route will allow the applicant to work, study or start a business in the UK.
High Potential Individual (HPI) visa
If you have been awarded a qualification by an eligible university in the last five years, you may be able to apply for permission to stay in the UK as an HPI. Whether your university is eligible will depend upon your year of graduation. The HPI visa grants a stay period based on the applicant’s highest qualification. If you hold a PhD or other doctoral qualification, you will be permitted to stay in the UK on this visa for a period of 3 years. If you hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree, this will allow you to remain in the UK for 2 years.
