UK Immigration
Starting from late January 2025, the Home Office will automatically convert eligible pre-settled status holders to settled status, eliminating the need for a second application. This automated process is designed to reduce the administrative burden on individuals and provide a seamless transition to settled status.
Here’s how it works:
Pre-settled status holders who are approaching the expiry of their status will be informed via email as their eligibility is reviewed, and updates will be provided if they are ineligible for automatic conversion.
This automation builds on existing safeguards, such as the automatic five-year extension of pre-settled status for those nearing its expiry. Individuals who do not wish to wait for automatic conversion still have the option to apply for settled status manually as soon as they become eligible.
For cases where pre-settled status holders no longer meet eligibility criteria—such as failing to maintain continuous UK residence—the Home Office will provide further guidance in due course. These considerations will ensure fairness while upholding the integrity of the system.
The phased rollout of this automation will be informed by ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and status holders. The Home Office remains open to feedback, ensuring the process evolves to meet the needs of those it serves.
If you would like to apply for settled status and do not wish to wait for the automatic conversion, please contact us.
