Crypto enforcement: Solicitors Journal highlights Gherson LLP’s insights on HMRC and SFO approaches

A recent article published by Solicitors Journal features insights from Gherson Solicitors LLP on the differing use of crypto enforcement tools by UK authorities. Drawing on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests submitted by Gherson, the article reveals that while HMRC has made limited use of Crypto Wallet Freezing and Forfeiture Orders since 2024, the SFO has not yet applied them.

Thomas Cattee, Partner and Head of the White-Collar Crime department at Gherson, noted that the figures remain limited. In the case of the SFO, these powers have not yet been used. He stated that the data offers insight into how agencies are beginning to engage with crypto enforcement and referenced the SFO’s intention to develop crypto expertise, as outlined in its 2025–26 Business Plan.
