Can I work in the UK remotely for a business in my home country?

May 18 2023

Unlike a number of other countries, the UK does not have a specific ‘remote worker’ visa.

Current Home Office guidance states that whilst visitors to the UK are permitted to undertake remote activities relating to their overseas employment whilst present in the UK, such as answering phone calls or responding to emails, a visitor’s main purpose of travel cannot be to use the UK as a base for remote overseas work.

All visitors to the UK must be mainly travelling for a permitted purpose(s). Permitted general business activities for visitors to the UK include attending meetings and conferences, negotiating contracts and being briefed on the requirements of a UK-based customer/client.

Visitors to the UK must also keep in mind that a pattern of frequent and successive visits to the UK will increase their risk of being denied entry to the UK on the basis of not being a genuine visitor.
