Can I work in the UK on a dependent visa?

Apr 12 2023

UK Immigration

The term ‘dependant’ in a UK immigration context refers to family members whose visa is tied to the main visa holder’s.

For example if someone has applied for a Skilled Worker visa for the UK, they would be considered the main applicant, and the worker’s partner and children would be considered to be dependents.

The general position is that those who hold a dependent visa are able to work and/or study in the UK.

The conditions normally applied prevent those who hold a dependent visa from accessing public funds in the UK, or working as a professional sportsperson or coach. All other employment or self-employment is allowed under the dependant visa category.

It is important for any UK visa holder to fully understand the conditions attached to their visa, and ensure that they comply with these conditions at all times, as any breach of these conditions can lead to difficulty when attempting to renew the visa, or when applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.
