Biography

Cong is a dual-qualified lawyer in England and Wales and the People’s Republic of China. She joined Gherson LLP in mid-2023.

With experience at pre-eminent international law firms in both jurisdictions, and having been awarded a PhD in International Investment Arbitration by the University of London, Cong has a deep understanding of international dispute resolution.

Cong has a proven track record of working on complex commercial disputes from the start of her career in 2011. Cong specialises in cross-border matters and has represented a number of clients before national courts and international arbitration tribunals. She has extensive knowledge of both public and private international law and has a wealth of experience in international trade disputes, contractual disputes and regulatory investigations.

Cong has a particular interest in and knowledge of investment treaty disputes – her doctoral study was on the Investor-State dispute settlement mechanisms available to foreign investors in China.

Notable experience

Some of the most notable cases on which Cong has been instructed (including at her previous firms) include:

  • Successfully acting for several energy companies in cross-border contractual disputes, including advocating on behalf of a manufacturer before CIETAC against a foreign counterparty and enforcing the arbitration award worth several million dollars in a foreign jurisdiction.
  • Representing several multinational retail chains in a number of property disputes and supply disputes in negotiation/litigation with local partners.
  • Advising several multinational companies in external/internal investigations involving security, bribery and corruption, anti-trust and anti-money laundering elements.
