On February 15th 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Federal law “On ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the United Arab Emirates on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters”. The Federal law was passed by the State Duma on 29th January 2016 and approved by the Federation Council on 10th February 2016.
According to the Treaty the Parties undertake, on a reciprocal basis, to render each other legal assistance in investigations, litigation or other legal proceedings associated with criminal cases. This could encompass a wide range of possible actions including requests for evidence, freezing orders and extradition.
It is understood that Russia is currently requesting the extradition of nine Russians from the UAE to the Russian Federation.
