Losing a passport can be a stressful experience, but it is essential to stay calm and assess the situation logically.
Once you are certain that your old passport is lost, report the loss to the relevant authorities immediately. In the UK, you should contact the local police station to file a report. Additionally, inform your country’s embassy or consulate in the UK about the lost passport.
Whilst losing your old passport is undoubtedly inconvenient, it is not the end of the road for your visa application. Begin gathering alternative documentation that can substantiate your travel history and identity. This might include copies of previous visas, travel itineraries and other official documents.
A police report serves as official documentation of the lost passport and can be crucial for your visa application. Ensure that you obtain a copy of the police report and keep it safe for future reference.
In parallel with the above steps, initiate the process of obtaining a new passport from your country’s embassy or consulate. This is a vital step, as you will need a valid passport to proceed with your UK visa application.
Once you have your alternative documentation in place and a new passport issued, get in touch with UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) to inform them about the loss of your old passport and the arrival of your new one.
If your visa is coming up for expiry and you do not hold a valid passport, it may be possible to still submit the visa application by informing the Home Office that your passport is lost or stolen.
When submitting your visa application, include all necessary supplementary documentation to support your case. This should include copies of your old passport, the new passport if already have this, the police report and any other relevant documents that can validate your travel history.
It is possible that UKVI may request additional information or conduct further checks due to the loss of your old passport. Be prepared to provide any requested documentation promptly and cooperate fully with their enquiries.
