POLICE REGISTRATION

A migrant who is coming to the UK for longer than 6 months, extending their current leave in the UK or switching to a different visa in the UK, may be required to register with the police.

A Migrant may be told to register with the police if all of the following apply:

  • Migrant is 16 or older
  • The migrant's visa or immigration application is for longer than 6 months
  • The migrant's visa or immigration application is not exempt from the police registration requirement
  • The migrant has been told to register on their entry visa vignette or Home Office letter that approved their application for leave
  • The migrant is from one of the countries in the following list: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Peru, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS LIST IS CORRECT AS OF THE 26th OF SEPTEMBER 2016. This may be changed at short notice and therefore it is always advisable to check if there are any changes.

The migrant does not need to register if they have dual nationality with one of these countries and another country that is not on the list.

Currently migrants who apply for entry clearance in an immigration category for a visa which is longer than 6 months, will be granted a 30-day entry clearance visa endorsement within their passports. They are then required to collect their Biometric Residence Permits within 10 days of arrival to the UK. The Biometric Residence Permit will contain the remainder of their visa duration.

Previously, the Biometric Residence Permits would contain the requirement to register with the police but this has now been removed.

Migrants required to register with the police who are applying for leave to enter the UK will see the police registration condition on the 30 day entry clearance visa endorsement issued to enable travel to the UK.They will need to show the vignette to the police when registering in the UK, together with the letter confirming that their application for leave was successful.

Those required to register must do so within 7 days of arrival in the UK.

Those applying for leave to remain who are already in the UK will be personally notified if they are required to register with the police by way of the Home Office letter confirming that their application for leave has been successful. They must show this letter when registering.

Further Information on registering with the police, including the documents required, is available at www.gov.uk/register-with-the-police
