What is the new plan for British citizenship?

10 May 2021, 11 mins ago

Amongst the proposed changes are proposals to introduce “a new discretionary adult registration route (which already exists for children) so that the Home Secretary can grant citizenship in compelling cases, which would otherwise result in an unfair outcome” and “further flexibility to waive residence requirements for naturalisation in exceptional cases”.

Whilst these changes could be welcome for many prospective applicants, few details on how the new discretionary adult registration route and residence requirement flexibility would work in practice have been given to date.

Consultation on the government’s New Plan for Immigration has only recently finished on 6 May 2021 and therefore, no changes have yet been passed in law. We will be actively monitoring for future developments.

If you are seeking to obtain British citizenship for yourself and/or your family members, please do not hesitate to contact the Gherson Immigration team for advice on your individual circumstances. Alternatively follow us on Twitter to stay up to date.
