The 2020 Olympics kick off this August in Tokyo, which will cause an injection of tourists in to Japan. For some Japanese nationals, this may be the time to visit another country to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle this will create.
If you are Japanese and have been considering a temporary move to the UK, to work, study or live, there is another route to enter to the UK on a temporary basis, besides entering as a visitor;
The Tier 5 (Youth Mobility) Scheme is available to 18 to 30 year olds, who are nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea or Taiwan, and British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas territories citizens or British nationals (Overseas). This scheme enables qualifying applicants to enter the UK for a 2-year period to live, work or study.
However, Japanese nationals must first enter a ballot to secure the opportunity to apply for a Tier 5 (Youth Mobility) Scheme visa.
There are a total of 1000 places, available to Japanese nationals in 2020. These places will be offered in two ballots the first, in January when 800 places will be made available, the second will take place in July when the remaining places will be on offer.
The ballot will open on Monday 27 January 2020 at 12pm (Japan time) and close on Wednesday 29 January 2020 12pm (Japan time).
Once the ballot closes on 29 January, the 800 applicants will be chosen at random by UKVI, and the successful entrants will be notified by 5 February 2020.
The ballot winners must submit their Tier 5 (Youth Mobility) visa applications no later than 30 March 2020. Permission to apply for a visa will be withdrawn should an applicant not meet this deadline.
