When should I start thinking about renewing my UK visa?

Advance planning can often help to make your UK immigration journey smoother. When to start thinking about your visa renewal will generally depend on the type and nature of the application that you are making.

For document-heavy applications, like Investor, Entrepreneur, Innovator or Sole Representative renewals, or if you are aware that your application will be discretionary in some respect (too many absences, for example), it is generally advisable to start planning your visa renewal 6-12 months in advance of your current visa’s expiry.

For Family visa applications, you should also allow a preparation window of over 6 months so that you can make sure you meet the financial requirements and have the correct evidence to hand.

For more straightforward categories, like Skilled Worker, it is usually sufficient to start a visa extension application process 3 months before the current visa expires.
