UK Government to help people to become HGV drivers to ease risk of shortages

The Home Office has announced plans to roll these visas out as a priority. However, details as to what route these visas will fall under and the specifics of making such an application have not yet been published

The announcement indicates that recruitment for such workers will begin in early October and the short-term visas to be granted will be valid through to 24 December 2021.

At present it is not clear exactly how these visas will be issued, or whether sponsorship will be required.

Despite the steps taken to re-welcome foreign HGV and poultry workers, the Government has highlighted that this solution is a temporary one, and that internal reform is vital for the industry in order to ensure long-term improvements in testing, hiring, wages and working conditions in the domestic work force.

As further developments are announced, this blog will continue to be updated.
