Section 4C British Citizenship: Who Can Apply?

Sep 15 2026

UK Immigration, Videos

If you were born outside the UK before 1 January 1983 to a British mother, you may have been denied British citizenship because, at the time, British nationality law did not allow mothers to pass on citizenship in the same way as fathers.

In this video, Gherson solicitors Sasha Lal and Priyanka Morjaria explain how Section 4C of the British Nationality Act 1981 addresses this historic gender discrimination and who may be able to register as a British citizen.

Key highlights:

  • Historic gender discrimination in British nationality law;
  • Who Section 4C applies to;
  • The three key eligibility requirements;
  • How Section 4C can apply across multiple generations;
  • How citizenship status, renunciation, deprivation and historic legitimacy rules may affect eligibility;
  • Application fees and whether there is a deadline to apply;
  • How specialist legal advice can assist with a Section 4C application.
