Press Release

08 Nov 2018, 20 mins ago

We are naturally relieved that common sense has prevailed and our client, Mrs. Zamira Hajiyeva, will finally be released on bail following her arrest on an extradition request from Azerbaijan.

It was extremely disappointing that the Crown Prosecution Service sought to appeal in this case but we are pleased that the High Court has today affirmed the obviously correct decision of the Senior District Judge to grant our client bail.

Our client is a 55-year-old mother of three with the strongest possible ties to the UK and it is unfortunate that she was forced to spend 9 days in custody despite having cooperated fully with the UK authorities and surrendered to them by appointment in respect of this request.

We would respectfully remind the press that our client has not been convicted of any offence. Given the sensationalist way in which her Unexplained Wealth Order case has been reported we would ask that the press now respect the privacy of her and her family and allow the judicial process to continue.

Our client is confident that she will defeat this abusive and politically motivated extradition request in due course.

Roger Gherson and Thomas Garner act for Mrs. Hajiyeva in respect of both the Unexplained Wealth Order and the extradition proceedings. This firm will be making no further comment at this stage.
