INTERPOL India Update: Indian CBI’s use of INTERPOL Red Notice increases since 2023

White Collar Crime

We have previously charted how China, India and Africa have bolstered their initiatives to enhasce their transnational financial crime fighting capabilities via INTERPOL both at the domestic level and internationally.

Indeed, we recently detailed how INTERPOL had collaborated with Indian enforcement authorities to enhance international cooperation.

Tracking the organisation’s broader collaboration efforts, we have previously detailed INTERPOL’s work with African law enforcement to disrupt criminal activity with the use of its Silver Notice system – in light of the fact that Cybercrime is on the rise in two-thirds of African countries, and how INTERPOL had expanded its international cooperation and collaboration with China.

The results of these collaborative initiatives are now becoming apparent with India reportedly issuing more INTERPOL notices than ever.

India’s CBI expands use of INTERPOL Red Notice

The Hindu has recently reported on the increasing number of INTERPOL Red Notices issued at India’s request.

The statistics are as follows:

2023 – 100 notices;

2024 – 107 notices;

2025 – 56 notices in the first six months.

This demonstrates India’s continuing commitment to pursuing individuals outside its jurisdiction. Indeed, this year we reported on how India had issued a Silver Notice in a crypto fraud case and also charged eight people in the first INTERPOL Silver Notice case.

We have written separately about the INTERPOL Silver Notice and why we think it is here to stay.

What does this mean?

With regards to investigations against individuals, the potential for enhanced information sharing (particularly to or from India), and the potentially easier access to evidence, may ultimately result in charges being brought against individuals based in the UK, extradition requests being issued against those based abroad, or INTERPOL Red Notices leading more readily to extradition proceedings.

If you are concerned about any liability resulting from business activities or if you have unresolved financial matters, including even an outstanding civil dispute, and you suspect that you may be subject to INTERPOL measures, including a Red Notice, expert legal advice should be sought at the earliest opportunity.

How Gherson can help

Those who suspect that they may be subject to INTERPOL measures, including Red or Blue Notices and diffusions, should take heed.

We continue to receive requests for expert advice and assistance from those who are concerned they may have outstanding financial issues which may engage INTERPOL. That advice frequently results in reviewing the following issues:

  1. How best to approach a possible INTERPOL notice;
  2. Preparing for potential criminal proceedings / an extradition request;
  3. Preparing for a situation where a civil matter or commercial dispute could be used to initiate bogus criminal proceedings; and
  4. Exploring the possibility of instigating civil litigation proceedings to recover any misappropriated assets.

Gherson have previously written a series of blogs designed to assist those who suspect they might be subject to INTERPOL measures (including Blue and Red Notices):
