Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): British nationals (Overseas) no longer require one

24 Mar 2025, 50 mins ago

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an initiative by the UK government that refers to a digital permission to travel to the UK for short-stay visitors. While it affects many nationalities, British National (Overseas) passport holders do not require an ETA.

What is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

An ETA is a new entry requirement that was introduced by the UK government for visitors to the UK that do not need a visa for short-stay visits.

The ETA system is designed to:

  • Streamline entry processes for travellers
  • Enhance border control
  • Reduce the risk of inadmissible persons reaching the UK

You can find more general information about ETAs here.

Who are the British Nationals (Overseas)?

The British National (Overseas) status was created for Hong Kong residents that retained ties to the UK before Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997.

What does this mean for British Nationals (Overseas) holders?

In practice, this means that if you are a British National (Overseas) passport holder, you do not need to apply for an ETA when travelling to the UK for a short visit.

However, it is still crucial to adhere to general UK entry requirements. The general UK entry requirements for British Nationals (Overseas) include the following:

  • Carrying a valid British National (Overseas) passport
  • Complying with the applicable visa requirements, such as providing evidence of booked return flights and proof of accommodation.

You may also have to provide evidence of the purpose of your visit.

If you are considering longer-term stays in the UK as a British National (Overseas) to study or work, you may consider visas, such as the British National (Overseas) visa. You can find out more about this option here

What about other travellers?

The ETA requirement continues to apply to other various nationalities. Travellers should keep track of the latest updates regarding ETA requirements. If you are planning to come to the UK and you require an ETA, you will need to apply for it in advance. You can read more about the application process here.

Summary

While this change simplifies the entry process for British National (Overseas) passport holders, it is important to be aware of the broader immigration requirements when planning a trip to the UK.
