COUNCIL OF EU LIFTS SANCTIONS AGAINST YURIY IVANYUSHCHENKO

06 Mar 2017, 12 mins ago

On 4 March 2017 the Council of the EU confirmed the renewal of sanctions against several prominent Ukrainian businessmen and former politicians alleged to have misappropriated state assets. This is the third annual renewal of these sanctions.

Gherson is pleased to confirm that our client, Yuriy Ivanyushchenko, has been removed from the sanctions list today.

These sanctions were first imposed in 2014 following the overthrow of Victor Yanukovych’s Government. We were first instructed in 2015 and have maintained throughout that these sanctions were nothing more than a politically motivated attack on our client by elements of the new government in Ukraine.

Ivanyushchenko’s legal team was lead by Ralph Isenegger and Konstantin Balandin.

Roger Gherson and Thomas Garner of Gherson solicitors and Brian Kennelly QC and Jason Pobjoy of Blackstone Chambers have been instructed in the case since April 2015 and today marks the culmination of 23 months of litigation.

The imposition of these sanctions has caused our client significant distress and reputational damage and has had a devastating effect on his business interests. Our client welcomes today’s decision and intends to aggressively pursue damages for the harm these sanctions have caused.
