The recent report by Revealing Reality, commissioned by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), sheds light on the experiences of UK farms utilising the Seasonal Worker Scheme (SWS).
As the SWS has grown, it has become indispensable for many farms facing seasonal labour shortages, particularly those in rural locations where attracting domestic workers can be challenging.
The report highlights the mutual benefits that the SWS provides to both farms and workers. Employers appreciate the strong work ethic and quality of labour provided by seasonal workers, many of whom return year after year, eager to maximise their earnings during their stay in the UK. To retain these workers, some farms have gone beyond the baseline requirements of the SWS by offering improved accommodation, organising social events and prioritising worker welfare.
However, the report also uncovers challenges within the SWS. The rigid time limits and cooling-off periods can conflict with the unpredictable nature of agricultural seasons, making it difficult for farms to maintain an optimal workforce. Additionally, reliance on third-party agencies and inconsistent communication regarding the scheme’s future adds to the administrative and financial burden on employers.
Overall, while the SWS is a vital resource for many UK farms, the report suggests that enhancements in flexibility and communication could further improve its effectiveness and sustainability.
